Movie Irreview: Stalker

When it comes to cinephiles, I often go against the grain.  I believe that both 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner are dramatically overrated movies.  I believe this while wholeheartedly acknowledging their influences on science fiction and cinema in general.  I believe that Stalker is like those movies.  Hugely influential, but insanely overrated.

It is an hour too long (at least), unnecessarily plodding (read: boring), rife with lazy exposition, and... well... I mean...

I guess I like it.  It's just not very good.  Of the two Andrei Tarkovsky films that I have seen, I thought for sure I would prefer Stalker, but I do not.  I much prefer Solyaris.  The disappointment of Stalker, however, will not prevent me from seeing more of Tarkovksy's work, and I am looking forward to viewing The Mirror in the near future.

I will admit to having fun identifying the many, many works from many, many genres that owe their existence to Stalker.  From films like Annihilation to video games like Metro: 2033 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, there is no question that Tarkovsky's vision will remain in the zeitgeist for generations to come.
